At Pando, progression is key. We support this through competency-based rubrics that clarify expectations at your current level, as well as for the levels above. The Level Progression Ring is a visual tool that reflects this progression, displaying your performance across competencies as you advance toward the next level.
What is the Level Progression Ring?
The Level Progression Ring, also called the Level Progress Percentage, is a visual gauge that represents how your performance aligns with competency expectations at your current level. It gives you and your manager a clear snapshot of where you stand in terms of meeting or exceeding these expectations.
How the Level Progression Ring is Calculated
The Level Progression Ring fills based on the ratings your manager assigns across all of your competencies. Here are some examples of how it works:
Delivering on Expectations (60%)
If you’re consistently meeting expectations, averaging a rating of 3 out of 5 across your competencies, the ring will show 60%.
Improving (40%)
When you’re mostly meeting expectations but still have areas to improve, averaging a 2 out of 5, the ring will display 40%.
Excelling (80%)
If you’re excelling in many areas and averaging 4 out of 5, the ring will show 80%.
Outperforming or Performing at the Next Level (100%)
When you’re fully exceeding expectations across all competencies with an average of 5 out of 5, the ring will display 100%.
What the Level Progression Ring Means
The Level Progression Ring does not automatically move you to the next level, but it indicates your current performance trend:
40-80%: Most employees will be in this range for much of their time at a given level. A 50-70% range indicates you are developing toward or starting to exceed current expectations
Above 80%: As you exceed 80%, it indicates that you’re performing close to or at expectations for the next level, showing you’re likely ready for new challenges.
Keep in mind that even though you may be ready for the next level, there are often requirements outside of your immediate control to be able to move up a level. Some examples are:
Business need: if an uplevel comes with a role change, the business must need that role in order to move someone up to it
As well, there may be multiple people ready for the next level but only one role available
Budget: if an uplevel comes with a compensation change, there has to be a budget for it
This may mean that, particularly at more senior levels, people may be at or near 100% on their completion ring for some time before an opportunity to uplevel comes. If that applies to you, keep working toward delivering, excelling, or even outperforming at the next level to ensure you're ready when the company is! And use your goals and achievements in Pando to continue to track and track toward greater success.
The Level Progression Ring helps you, your manager, and your people team understand your current level of impact and guide discussions about career advancement.
